You didnt mention that the shidduch idea is brilliant for one main reason… the shaddchan checks out whether one of the two proposed has a temper, are their parents honest in business, is there any major hereditary health issues… Once the boy and girl have the green light that this match is a good potential husband/wife , they can go ahead and see if chemistry is good too Unlike a non-shidduch match they dont have to discover after falling in love that their partner has some major personality problem etc….!
Of course the shaddchan doesnt have to be a ‘professional’ one, a sweet aunt or friend could also be, but background checking before going out is crucial to a future happy life together ( not the kindergarden part and other ridicules questions of course) Going out and being married is something to be very much enjoyed ….

Interesting change of pace in that last comment – so I thought I’d continue the trend: therapy would be a nice addition to an already seemingly mechanistic process. Baruch Hashem, in a world where divorce is on a scary incline, the shidduch process reminds us of what the important things are in marriage. Communication, hard work and commitment, and respect (if not sharing) of values. Moreover, the fact that we marry young demonstrates our interest in developing together to form a cohesive unit, a team.
With media becoming a dominant force that injects society’s skewed self-interested and pleasure-seeking values into the Orthodox sphere, the shidduch process might become even more beneficial and gain tremendously in protecting the stability and sanctity of our marriages. Good point doc!

All’s well that ends well. But boy, they (our rebbaim) should be pushing the premarital therapy. Ha Kodesh BaruchHu made gittin before kiddushin, (divorce before matrimony) the cure before the malady, but seriously, it’s an emotionally, and often financially expensive solution.

I liked how you respectfully presented ideas that may be confusing to some without any pretentious “This is the right thing to do, OKAY?!” It managed to touch on many points and give a great overview without going in over anyone’s heads. I also had a scary moment, by the Bride’s-Friends-Picture, where I thought it was my wedding, and then it hit me that wow they really DO all look the same.
